Endometriosis occurs when the cells in the inner mucous layer of the uterus (endometrium) grow elsewhere/outside of the uterus (they are not able to be expelled during menstruation), these cells usually attach themselves to the ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterine muscle, bowel or bladder.
