Edema

Edema (fluid retention) is a condition characterised by an excess of watery fluid collecting in the cavities or soft tissues of the body. Edema may develop in any part of the body as a result of infections, allergies, and prolonged bed rest.

NOTE: Edema may indicate an underlying condition such as Liver cirrhosis, congestive heart failure, diabetes, AIDS, Kidney disease, thyroid conditions and Vena cava syndrome. If the skin retains dimples (pits), after being pressed for several seconds it would be wise to consult a medical practitioner. 1. Swelling or puffiness in the legs, ankles, arms, face, neck, and around the eyes.

Edema can occur as a result of:

5. Poor nutrition, inflammation, allergic reactions, severe burns, and trauma, may be a factor.
6. High dietary salt intake can make edema worse.
