This is a blood abnormality involving white blood cells called granulocytes (neutrophils) in the blood and bone marrow. Agranulocytosis can affect all age groups and both sexes.
Symptoms:
Fever, aches and pains a sore throat with ulcers in the throat and mouth. Rectal or vaginal ulcers may also occur. This condition requires prompt medical treatment.
Treatments:
Hospitalization, a high degree of cleanliness, a blood transfusion of white blood cells, antibiotics, and isolation to avoid infections are indicated. This condition can be fatal or dangerous if an infection develops.
Causes:
This condition is caused by an abnormal fall in the level or an absence of granulocytes due to the failure of the bone marrow to produce them. The bone marrow may fail to produce granulocytes because of an adverse reaction to certain drugs which may include: anticancer drugs, immunosuppressants, sulphonamides, and chloramphenicol. Certain chemicals may also cause this condition.
