Description
Infectious mononucleosis, often called mono or glandular fever, is a viral infection usually caused by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). It’s commonly transmitted through saliva and is often referred to as the “kissing disease” due to its association with close contact, although it can also spread through coughing, sneezing, and sharing utensils or drinks.
Though rare, complications can include a ruptured spleen (avoiding physical activity is often recommended to prevent this), hepatitis, jaundice, and, in some cases, anemia.
Contagiousness: The virus can be contagious for weeks before symptoms appear and can persist for several months after symptoms have resolved. It’s advisable to avoid kissing and close contact with others and to practice good hygiene to prevent its spread.
Symptoms
It typically manifests as flu-like symptoms, including
1. Fever
2. Sore throat
3. Swollen lymph nodes
4. Fatigue
5. swollen spleen
6. Rash
7. Headache
8. Muscle aches
The symptoms can last for several weeks and may linger for a longer period, with fatigue often persisting for months after other symptoms have subsided.
Treatments
There’s no specific treatment for mono. Rest, hydration, and over-the-counter pain relievers can help manage symptoms. In severe cases, corticosteroids might be prescribed to reduce swelling in the throat or tonsils.
Nutrients and supplements:
1. Buffered Vitamin C – is known for its immune-supporting properties, vitamin C may help the body fight infections and reduce the duration and severity of symptoms.
2. Vitamin D – Plays a crucial role in immune function. Some studies suggest that maintaining adequate vitamin D levels might assist in recovery.
3. Zinc – Helps support the immune system. It might aid in reducing the duration of cold symptoms, but evidence regarding its efficacy for mono specifically is limited.
4. Echinacea – Often used for immune support
5. Probiotics – Might help in maintaining gut health and supporting the immune system during recovery from an infection.
6. Oxy 101 – is a strong immune booster and may be used for viral, bacterial, and parasitic conditions.
7. Immune formula – for supporting a low immune system and for auto-immune disorders.
8. Immune Defence – CAMED Immune Defense with Beta Glucans was developed for a wide range of ailments. Made for the sole purpose of boosting your immune system and strengthening the body.
9. Colostrum + -strengthens the immune system and helps repair damaged tissue. Helps with gastro-intestinal diseases, eliminates parasites, viruses, and bacteria.
10. Septogard lozenges – soothing throat lozenge that help relieve a sore throat commonly associated with colds and flu
Causes
Infectious mononucleosis, commonly known as mono or glandular fever, is primarily caused by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), a member of the herpesvirus family. Some key causes and factors related to the spread and contraction of infectious mononucleosis include:
1. Close Contact: Close contact with an infected individual, particularly through activities such as kissing or sharing utensils or drinks, increases the likelihood of transmission.
2. Saliva Exchange: The virus is commonly spread through saliva, which can be transferred via coughing, sneezing, or sharing items contaminated with saliva.
3. Asymptomatic Carriers: Some people infected with EBV may not exhibit symptoms but can still spread the virus. This makes it difficult to prevent the spread of the virus entirely.
4. Weakened Immune System: A weakened immune system, due to factors such as stress, fatigue, or other illnesses, can make an individual more susceptible to contracting the virus and developing symptoms of mononucleosis.
Underlying Emotions
Diet
1. Hydration: Drink plenty of fluids, particularly water and herbal teas, to stay hydrated and soothe a sore throat.
2. Soft Foods: Eat easy-to-swallow, soft foods if you have a sore throat or difficulty swallowing. This might include soups, broths, yogurt, smoothies, mashed potatoes, and cooked fruits.
3. Balanced Diet: Aim for a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats. These foods support overall health and can assist in the recovery process.
4. Vitamin C Rich Foods: Incorporate foods high in vitamin C, like citrus fruits, strawberries, bell peppers, and leafy greens, which may help boost the immune system.
5. Zinc Sources: Foods containing zinc, such as nuts, seeds, legumes, and whole grains, might support immune function.
6. Probiotic Foods: Consider including probiotic-rich foods like yogurt or fermented foods to support gut health and the immune system.
7. Avoid Irritating Foods: Spicy, acidic, or rough-textured foods might aggravate a sore throat, so it’s advisable to avoid them.
